CAMP KINDERLAND 1937
Instruction Sheet # 6
Today is Rainkeit [Cleanliness] Day:
Yesterday, new children came to camp. It is necessary to make a good, sanitary
search in and around the bungalows. We must especially wash the bungalows with
CN. The inspection committee will also examine the cleanliness of the children.
Cut their nails. Last week we found children with very long dirty nails.
Rainy Days
Be careful that on rainy days the children wear raincoats or galoshes We saw
children going around in lights shirts and sneakers. In such a case we will be
very strict. We must take care of the children’s health.
Vant-tseitungen [Wall newspapers] (A literal translation, never used, even
today)
Tomorrow, Saturday, at 2 P.M., the vant-tseitung committee will visit your
bungalows and give you the signs for the vant-tseitung. We expect that your work
will be ready and that you are preparing for the second vant-tseitungs.
Remember, tomorrow the vant-tseitung committee will visit your bungalow.
Salute
Sunday we will have anti-war and anti-fascism. Do not leave the preparations for
the last minute. We want the salute to have an impact [make an impression]. If
you need something, let the office know immediately.
Yungvarg (The name of a children’s magazine; it means “youth.”)
We would like to point out that nothing has been done to create subscribers to
Yungvarg. The third group has distinguished itself in this work, and the first
and second groups have completely neglected the job. Saturday and Sunday are
suitable days for this. Speak to the parents. Create subscribers to Yungvarg.
Quotas for the groups are:
Group 1* -- 15
Group 2 -- 15
Group 3 -- 10
Group 4 – 10
Go above the quotas. But in no case, get fewer.
*Apparently, they were not yet called “ershteh gruppeh” [first group], etc.
Lost things
There are many lost things in the office. [literal transl.: There are found in
the office many lost things.] We do not want this to reach alarming proportions.
Find out which of your children have lost things and come into the office to
find out if they are yours.
Instruction Sheet # 8
Dear Chaverim [comrade? friend?] Counselors:
We are calling your attention to a whole row of instructions you must observe
very strictly. No explanations/justifications will be accepted, and we will be
very strict with anyone who violates [lit., “breaks”] the discipline.
Swimming
1. We want to make clear to you that not a single child should go to the
waterfront without a counselor.
2. The counselor is with the children in the water.
3. Counselors swim within the ropes with their children.
4. If any counselor goes outside the ropes, we will send his bunk out of the
water.
5. The buddy system must be strictly observed. No child goes into the water
without a buddy.
6. Be very strict that no child should be at the waterfront when there are
activities around the bunk or in the camp.
Boats
1. Maximum – five children in a boat
2. Every boat has an adult or a “junior lifeguard.”
3. If a counselor leaves the dock we will consider it a serious discipline
infraction. [lit.: “break”]
4. You can go rowing in the evenings only when Chaverim Zackheim, Weiss and
Feignbloom are at the water, and a boat [is patrolling?] the water.
Indian Days
No Indian Day can happen when the counselor is off. When an Indian Day occurs,
lifeguards must be in the water. The children will swim in their customary
places.
Campfires
Today is a general [probably all-camp] campfire, led by the third group. Every
counselor must build cooperation and sit with his group and maintain order. We
will not tolerate a counselor leaving [lit.: “going away”] and leaving the
children alone. At the end of the campfire, there will be a general [all-camp?]
march. We request that everyone join the march and, in order, return to camp.
Sunday Concert
We want to call your attention to a breach of discipline of the second and third
group boys, for failing to cooperate with Chaver Brisman and send the children
to rehearsal. We consider it is not comradely behavior to fail to cooperate with
camp activities. [Lit.: “we consider this as not a comradely way to manage by
not cooperating…”] Saturday, 2 P. M. there will be a general rehearsal. We
request all chaverim counselors to see that the children who are participating
in the play, dance, singing and dramatics be at the rehearsal on time.
Cleanliness
The inspection committee today did not find the camp as clean as it should be on
a Friday, especially bunks 1, 2, 5, 6. We draw to your attention that a special
inspection will occur on Saturday, 10 A.M. and we want to find the camp 100
percent clean. We will be very strict and we will let it be known, at Sunday’s
salute, which bunks were not clean.
